What's on Your Financial To-Do List for January? | Cleveland Bradley County Teachers Federal Credit Union

When the first of January rolls around, we’re busy thinking up resolutions and goals to find more success in the new year.

Now that we’re in the middle of January, it’s time to make sure we are taking action with our resolutions to improve financial health.

Our team at Cleveland Bradley County Teachers Federal Credit Union wants to offer you suggestions on what financial needs to tackle first. Read on as we take a look.

Check Your Credit Score

While you might not be making a big purchase like a home or car in 2019, you never know when you will be or when circumstances will require a large purchase. You want to make sure your credit score is ready for whenever you need it most.

Review your credit reports annually to ensure they don’t contain inaccurate information, and check on your credit score regularly, as well. If it’s not where you want it to be, take steps to improve it, like paying bills on time and lowering your debt to credit ratio.

Get Rid of Unnecessary Expenses

That gym membership you haveā€”are you really using it, or are you just paying for it? When you watch television, do you mostly only watch Netflix or Hulu rather than cable?

Why spend money on things you are not even using? It is time to clean up your bills by getting rid of subscriptions and memberships you no longer need. Consider cancelling things like gym memberships and cable to help make room for more money in your wallet for other things, such as retirement or an emergency fund.

Put Money Into a Savings Account

When you created your household budget for 2019, did you include a line item for savings? You should have!

Set up regular transfers from your checking account into a savings account, or have part of every paycheck direct deposited into savings. You need to be able to financially handle any emergency life may send your way.
