Tips for Selling a Home in Winter | Cleveland Bradley County Teachers Federal Credit Union

While spring is the season when home sales really bloom, there’s no law that says you can’t move your property in winter. In fact, winter can be a wonderful time to sell your home because many people hold off listing their properties in the colder months.

And there may be particular opportunity this year, with demand never flagging, despite the health and economic crisis gripping the nation, and home stock down. In fact, home sales hit a 14-year high in August, even as total inventory hit a record low in September.

So, what does it take to sell a home in winter and what should you do to increase the chances you’ll find an interested buyer? Here are some tips for helping move that property before the spring thaw comes around:

1. Keep the driveway and sidewalk clear. We don’t get many major snowstorms around here, but between the winter weather we do see and the lingering debris of fall, it’s still important to keep clear access to the property. And if things get icy or otherwise slippery, make sure you do what you need to do to keep visitors safe.

2. Go light on the holiday decorations. We’re not saying go full Scrooge here, but if you tend to go all-out for Christmas, you may want to step it back this year. Part of the strategy of selling a property is giving potential buyers a blank canvas on which they can imagine painting their lives, so if your decorations aren’t their taste, they may make that hard.

3. Protect your curb appeal. Whether it’s dirt splattered on the side of the house by fall rains or that last pile of leaves that never made it off the curb, make sure your place makes a great first impression.

4. Keep the home fires burning. Provided you have a fireplace, of course. If it’s wood-burning, keeping it stoked can give your place a homey feel people love. If it’s gas-fired, consider leaving an invitation for visitors to use the remote or switch to turn it on.

5. Keep it warm and light. Creating an inviting, well-lit space can go a long way to making people feel welcome in your place. Plus, bright rooms feel bigger, open and happy, so turn on those lights, open the blinds and make people feel at home.
