Should your Teens Brown-Bag Their Lunches?

The United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service states that many high school students prefer to bring a bag lunch from home. And while it is easier to just give them money to use for the lunch at school, there is something special about packing a child’s lunch – even if it takes a little more effort.

So embrace the memories (and save some money) by packing your students’ lunches.

Eat and Save!

Your child’s school lunch doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. And preparing it doesn’t have to be stressful task either.

Here are a few tips to making your child’s lunch easy on your wallet and yourself:

Make a list, and check it twice. Create a list of what you need from the grocery store. Do not forget to include protein, grains, fruits, and/or vegetables. Also, try and switch it up so that your child doesn’t get bored with the “same ole’ lunch.”

A way to do this as frugally as possible is to pay attention to the weekly ad specials in the newspaper or online.

Bulk up. Lunch at school happens five days a week. That is a lot of bread and apples and juice boxes. Since you know these will be used, try and bulk up on these products – especially when they are on sale.

In addition, buy reusable containers. This way, you are not only being kind to the environment, but it will save on the daily purchase of lunch and sandwich bags.

Get your kids involved. High-school aged children can prepare their own lunches, with the healthy ingredients you provide. Not only will they be able to choose the food they love best, but it will be one thing off of your own to-do list. Win-win!

A healthy school lunch can be easy and affordable. Make brown-bags a part of your family’s routine!
