How to Have a Happy, Money-saving Halloween | Cleveland Bradley County Teachers Federal Credit Union

By now, your students and children probably have a million ideas of what they want to be for Halloween. The team at Cleveland Bradley County Teachers Federal Credit Union has some tips to offer to help you and your family have a spook-tacular Halloween without breaking your budget.

Halloween on a Budget

Last year, Americans spent approximately $8.4 billion on candy and costumes during Halloween, according to the National Retail Federation’s survey. With a number like that, who knows what it will look like for 2017. But there are plenty of ways to get into the holiday spirit without breaking the bank.

Of course, there are the costumes. And let’s face it, the retail stores love to slap high prices on costumes that are only going to be worn a couple times. However, you can save on your child’s Halloween costume in a couple ways.

Of course, you can always make the costume yourself. However, if your sewing skills aren’t up for the task, try going to thrift stores or consignment sales. You may even be able to uncover some good Halloween finds at garage sales!

And while you want to do what you can to help “set the scene” for Halloween in your home, don’t break the bank to do so. Instead, try to use what you can from the previous years. In addition, instead of buying each child a pumpkin, why not choose one pumpkin that you can decorate together? Also, grab some paint and construction paper—and allow your kids to make the Halloween signs for the front door!

Remember, it isn’t about how much you spend on Halloween. It’s about spending quality time together and having fun, which can cost little to nothing if you just think outside the box!
