Fall Into Savings | Cleveland Bradley County Teachers Federal Credit

It’s almost here…the most glorious weather that the South has to offer—fall. The trees show us the true meaning of beauty, there is still plenty of sunshine but without the overwhelming humidity and everything is pumpkin-scented or pumpkin-flavored.

Even if you aren’t a fan of all things autumn, you can’t deny that the break in the heat is a sweet gift. Without the heat, you can give your HVAC a little bit of a rest, which will also lead to the sweet gift of a lowered electric bill.

Cutting your electrical costs aren’t the only ways to save money during the changing of the seasons either. So whether you love sweater weather or you just buckle up and hang on until next summer, you can still fall into savings.

Start Inside

Being able to cut the AC for a little while does go a long way in saving on electrical costs, but there are also a few other ways you can save money during the seasonal change.

While the temperatures are lower, there is generally still plenty of sunshine during the fall. Take advantage of this and leave your blinds open longer and use less artificial lighting. On cooler nights, open the windows and skip any air conditioning usage at all. Even simple things like using less technology at night can make a difference. Gather the family around the fire pit and skip your binge-watching a few evenings every week.

Like in spring, add a few extra maintenance steps to your to-do list. Check the seals on your windows and doors, and spend some time in the attic to ensure you have plenty of insulation. Get your HVAC or furnace unit professionally inspected so that you know it is running as efficiently as possible when the chill of winter sets in. If you have a fireplace fall is the perfect time to have it cleaned and inspected as well so that it is ready to safely provide that cozy feeling all winter.

Think Outside the Box

Taking care of your home not only cuts your bills, but it also helps ensure you will ride out whatever the winter weather brings safely. But it certainly isn’t the only way to add extra savings into your fall season. With a few out-of-the-box ideas, you can cut down on some of your other regular bills while you enjoy all things pumpkin.

Start by planning less extravagant meals. Extravagant can just mean something with a lot of fresh ingredients. Fall is the perfect time to drag whatever you have lying around out of the cabinet, toss it in the crockpot and call it stew. Skipping out-of-season produce can also help you save on your grocery bill as these go up in cost once they become harder to find.

Let the seasonal change be a time that you review your monthly memberships. Are you really going to get out in the cold and head to the gym every day? Did you stop listening to audiobooks months ago? It is easy to let low-cost monthly fees pass you by long-term without much thought, but those really add up over time. Cancel what you are not using, or pause them until you know you will use them again.

This fall, find ways to carve extra savings into your daily life. You can use those funds to cover your pumpkin-flavored-everything addiction, or just cling to it dearly as you dream about summer.
